Body Alignment
ABOUT
Ilse Steenkamp
I am a qualified Body Alignment practitioner with a background in Psychology, counselling and Hypnotherapy.
“It became very evident that traumas, heartbreaking and gut-wrenching emotions, and especially the everyday build-up of stresses causes illness and
skeletal/muscular problems. Talking, understanding and drugs can dampen these conditions and symptoms but in the end the body keeps the score.
The impact of emotional stress on the human body is much deeper than most people realise. This became of particular interest to me.
The body becomes physically restricted when emotions and stresses are bound up inside and pain is the bodies way of communicating that things are
out of balance.
By doing a session of Body Alignment the physical tension is released, so are the bound-up stresses and emotions. The body becomes freer as the
body-brain connection is re-established. I would recommend this treatment to any individual experiencing and physical discomfort resulting from
stress, trauma or injuries.

What is Body Alignment, breakdown and benefits of the treatment?
In our ever increasing fast paced and complex lifestyle, sometimes just getting through the day causes stress within the body that we are unaware of.
Until the accumulated buildup of stress results in the body feeling pain. Sometimes the incorrect manner in which you exercise, bad posture, physical
and/or emotional trauma, chemical pollution (food additives and polluted air) may cause the muscle to develop an abnormal and sustained contraction
known as a hypertonic spasm. Since muscles comprise 2/3 of your body, a muscle in spasm will have a direct effect on the nervous and circulatory
system and thus impact every function of your body. These hard muscles exert such a pull on the vertebrae and skeletal joints that the bones could
subsequently become misaligned. They could also cause wear and tear on the cartilage in between the bones (disintegration, compressed and
herniated discs). These misaligned and/or degenerated bones then adversely affect the nerves by pinching on them, causing pain and numbness.
Pain wreaks havoc with our immune system, disrupting the balance within the body, undermining our health in general and affecting the holistic
optimal functioning of the body. Drugs may alleviate the pain or possibly just mask the problem for only awhile. But then you must examine the root
cause.
Body Alignment stimulates the muscles to relax, heal and unravel the tension stored in deep layers of the muscles.
It is important to understand that the source of your complaint is rarely an isolated spasm in one part of your body alone. All parts of the body are
dependent on each other. Anything that affects one part of the body affects the entire organism and the whole system becomes irritated and
dysfunctional. The body is a linked system of many interactive components, and it is unbeneficial to concentrate and focus on only one component in
order to diminish misalignment. This is why I treat the whole body. Your body is holistic, muscles are interconnected. It is important to treat the whole
pattern and not just the area in which the symptom occurred.
Body Alignment is a therapy that assists the body to effectively and completely remove discomfort and pain due to stress and build-up emotions. The
client remains fully clothed during the session and I assist the body to relax using specific hand movements, predominantly concentrating on the spinal
column. I apply stimuli by means of a light but definite and firm pressure to encourage the muscles to release the stored-up tension.
