You probably feel guilty as there are 10 days left of the year and 2020 is creeping up fast. Don’t stress, as 2020 signals a new year, new beginnings and time for new resolutions. But what can you do in 2020 to make a difference in your life (and avoid the same situation next year this time)? Most of us only reach a fraction of our new year’s resolutions (if any) and we beat ourselves up about it every year. This results in us feeling guilty and demotivated.

So how can you end 2019 not feeling guilty?

Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. You can’t change the past, but you can focus on enjoying the last 10 days of 2019! Spend time with family and friends. Rest, relax and rejuvenate as 2020 might be a big one.

Take the remainder of 2019 to set up a REAL plan for 2020.

New year’s resolutions are not serious if there are no actionable plans “attached” to them. The real question is therefore whether you know how to create and implement a plan that will help you achieve your 2020 new year’s resolutions?

Setting up a new year’s resolution plan is simpler than you think. Make it part of your life as the key to successful execution is consistency. Don’t create a new year resolution plan if you’re not planning to stick to it for the long run.

When you Google “How to keep to your new year’s resolution” you will typically get the following advice:
• Keep your resolutions simple.
• Don’t wait till the last minute
• Choose carefully.
• Be realistic.
• Start with small steps
• Plan a time-frame
• Make notes
• Change is a process
• Understand your motivation
• Treat and reward yourself
• Receive support

This is all good well. But is it really this easy? Why do we keep on failing at this? If we consider the first point, i.e., keep it simple, then from the above list we can extract three important concepts:

Firstly, careful consideration of one’s motivation for the new year’s resolution is required. Motivation is key. Your motivation has to be true to yourself. Secondly, one has to accept that any change is a process, a slow process, and finally, it is important that you receive support for your undertaking. This includes surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people.

Central to any of the above actionable steps is that you maintain good Health & Wellness. There is nothing more important for any person in this world. No matter your age, demographics or financial status. Without health & wellness, any person will struggle to reach any goal.

What is Health & Wellness?

It is simple, Health is the absence of illness.

Wellness is different, it is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth. “…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

There are 8 dimensions of wellness, namely:

Wellness is like water running over rocks. The rocks are all the aspects of your life (as illustrated above) while the water is the wellness that runs through it. Take a moment to imagine how the water is running over, under and in between rocks. It flows through, not missing one rock. That is wellness. It affects and improves all the aspects of your life.
